Why SHSAT Math Review Needs Categories
A parent cannot fix math if every error goes into one bucket. A student may miss an algebra question because they do not know the rule, because they translated the words incorrectly, because they rushed arithmetic, or because they used the wrong answer format.
The first review step is to separate topic from cause.
Algebra and Equation Setup
Algebra misses often come from choosing the wrong variable, setting up the wrong relationship, or losing track of what the question asks for.
For these students, more arithmetic is not enough. They need to practice translating sentences into equations and checking whether the final answer answers the actual question.
Ratios, Percents, and Rates
Ratios and percents create many tempting wrong answers because students may add when they should multiply, compare the wrong quantities, or ignore the base value.
A useful review asks the student to write what the 100 percent represents, what the ratio compares, or what the rate means before doing calculations.
Geometry and Visual Reasoning
Geometry errors may come from missing a hidden relationship, using a formula without checking units, or failing to draw a useful diagram.
Students should practice labeling diagrams and writing the target quantity before calculating. That small habit catches many avoidable mistakes.
Grid-Ins and Answer Format
Grid-in questions add another layer: the student must solve and enter the answer correctly. A student who understands the math can still lose points if they mishandle decimals, fractions, or the requested form.
If grid-ins are a weak spot, practice the format separately. Do not wait until the next full test.
How to Build the Next Week
After a diagnostic, choose the biggest math category and one cause. For example: ratios because the student uses the wrong base, or word problems because the student skips the setup.
Then use short daily sets and review every miss. The purpose is not more pages; the purpose is changing the behavior that caused the miss.
