Why This Mistake Matters
Many students choose the transition that sounds most familiar. In revising/editing questions, that is risky because each transition has a job. However signals a contrast. Therefore signals a result or conclusion.
The trap is that both choices may sound school-like. The student has to decide what the second sentence does in relation to the first sentence.
The Student Move
Before looking at the answer choices, have the student name the relationship between the two ideas: contrast, result, example, sequence, or comparison.
If the second sentence happens because of the first, look for a result word such as therefore. If the second sentence pushes against the first, look for a contrast word such as however.
One-Question Practice
Question: Which transition best connects the ideas? The student rewrote the explanation twice to make the evidence clearer. ____, the final paragraph was easier for readers to follow.
Correct answer: Therefore.
Why: the easier final paragraph is the result of rewriting the explanation. However would signal a contrast, for example would introduce an illustration, and meanwhile would signal another event happening at the same time.
What to Watch For Next
If your child misses this kind of item, do not tell them to memorize a transition list first. Make them say the logic in plain language before they look at A, B, C, and D.
