Why This Mistake Matters

Work-rate problems feel simple until a student combines times instead of rates.

The trap is to average 6 hours and 12 hours, or to add the hours together. The useful unit is not hours per tank. It is tanks per hour.

The Student Move

Convert each person, pipe, or machine into a rate: part of the job per hour.

Then add the rates. If the combined rate is 1/4 of the job per hour, the full job takes 4 hours.

One-Question Practice

Question: Pipe A can fill a tank in 6 hours. Pipe B can fill the same tank in 12 hours. If both pipes run together, how many hours will it take to fill the tank?

Correct answer: 4.

Why: Pipe A fills 1/6 of the tank per hour. Pipe B fills 1/12 of the tank per hour. Together they fill 1/6 + 1/12 = 3/12 = 1/4 of the tank per hour, so the full tank takes 4 hours.
